Whenever I hear that foods are recalled because of salmonella, I know not to worry about it…
Because I know a coverup is in place.
My local favorite restaurant (and grocery store) have signs claiming there is a Salmonella outbreak affecting avocados. And as a precautionary move, they were ordered to trash all avocado inventory.
My science friends tell me Salmonella cannot affect avocados.
Salmonella is a bacterium commonly found in human and animal intestines. Allegedly, it can also be found in raw meats, poultry, eggs and in unpasteurized milk. But it is never found in produce.
So I contacted my mole at Whole Foods… a produce buyer. And she confirmed what I suspected…
The real reason for the disappearance of avocados from the food chain was actually a grower’s strike in Mexico.
The strike, which started at the end of October, was the result of a dispute between avocado growers and packing and distribution companies in the Mexican state of Michoacán, the country’s largest producer of avocados. During the 16-day strike, weekly shipments plummeted, falling from 40 million pounds of avocados the week of Oct. 28 to 4.8 million two weeks later, according to data from the Hass Avocado Board, an industry promotional group.
The strike lasted 16 days and was settled on November 14th. Now, these freshly picked avocados can be delivered to “ripening centers” and reach their destinations by this week.
According to produce distributor Jason Lambros, vice president of food for Coastal Sunbelt Produce:
The avocados that have been coming over have literally been hard as rocks. For us to warm them up and ripen them takes time.
Just as I suspected.
Clearly, this avocado Salmonella outbreak is nothing more than an illusion to hide the real reason for the lack of avocados – a grower’s strike.
